The Holly celebrates International Nurses Day
The nursing team at The Holly Private Hospital celebrated International Nurses Day on Thursday 12 May 2016. Started by the International Council of Nurses in 1965, International Nurses Day coincides with Florence Nightingale’s birthday.
Sharon Gatland, Director of Nursing and Acting Hospital Director said: “It’s nice for our nurses to have a day of recognition and to celebrate the very important role they have here at The Holly Private Hospital in caring for our patients. Thank you to each and every one of them for all their hard work.”
The nursing team at the hospital were presented with gift bags as a token of our appreciation for all that they do. Some of the team also attended a special service at Westminster Abbey in honour of International Nurses Day. In it a lantern is symbolically passed from one nurse to the next, to represent the passing on of knowledge between nurses, until finally the Dean places it on the altar.
About International Nurses Day
International Nurses Day (IND) is an international day celebrated around the world on 12 May (the anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth) of each year, to mark the contributions nurses make to society.
The International Council of Nurses (ICN) has celebrated this day since 1965.
In 1953 Dorothy Sutherland, an official with the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare, proposed that President Dwight D. Eisenhower proclaim a “Nurses’ Day”; he did not approve it.
In January 1974, 12 May was chosen to celebrate the day as it is the anniversary of the birth of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing. Each year, ICN prepares and distributes the International Nurses’ Day Kit. The kit contains educational and public information materials, for use by nurses everywhere.
