Cutting edge breast screening uses half the radiation
The new state-of-the-art digital mammography system at Holly House Hospital, which uses half the radiation dose whilst maintaining high image quality, was officially opened by Consultant Breast Surgeon, Miss Stephanie Jenkins.
Every year, more than 44,000 British women are diagnosed with breast cancer. Mammography screening is the only method of early detection which has been shown to reduce the number of deaths from breast cancer. Through regular breast screening, it is possible to detect breast cancer at an early stage, before women might actually feel a lump in your breast, and when treatment success rates are highest.
The introduction of the Sectra MicroDose Mammography at Holly House Hospital is part of a £350,000 investment in the Diagnostic Centre. It demonstrates the hospital’s commitment to continuous investment and improvements both in terms of medical technology and also in patient care.
Allyson Budino, Imaging Services Manager at Holly House Hospital, said: “Women today are very health conscious, more so than previous generations, and so we are delighted to become one of the first local healthcare providers to offer this innovative breast screening service. We chose this system because it offers women the lowest radiation dose, whilst maintaining the best image quality, and also has the facility to measure bone density baselines used for detecting osteoporosis. At Holly House, we support and encourage patients to attend their NHS breast screen but we can now offer annual screening for women over 40 years due to this advanced MicroDose technology.”
