The Holly Private Hospital launches bid to become first UK private hospital to achieve major US Magnet® nursing accreditation

The Holly Private Hospital today announced its intention to become the first private hospital in the UK to achieve Magnet® status. Magnet® status is an US accreditation for outstanding nursing practice granted by the American Nurses’ Credentialing Center, an affiliate of the American Nurses Association.

The award-winning Holly Private Hospital has been working towards Magnet® accreditation for the past 12 months, coordinated by Dr Lorraine Kelly, Director of Nursing and Clinical Services. The journey is expected to take several years with the hospital aiming to gain full Magnet® accreditation in 2020.

Speaking about why the hospital is opting to go for Magnet® status, Dr Lorraine Kelly said,

“The Holly Private Hospital is going for Magnet® recognition because it’s the highest international distinction a healthcare organisation can receive for nursing excellence. The Magnet® journey is complex and involves adherence to a series of complex evidence-based standards and bench-marking of nurse-sensitive indicators internationally. It involves a significant programme of transformation change and practice development but the Holly team is fully committed to delivering that change.

The journey towards accreditation compliments and supports what we are trying to achieve through our Five Year Business Plan and Clinical Strategy and is consistent with the Care Quality Commission key lines of enquiry and the Nursing and Midwifery Council Code.

Magnet® is about achieving a consistently excellent quality of nursing care across all of the clinical services we provide. It is about ensuring that our patients always receive nursing care that is safe, well-led, effective, based upon research evidence, responsive and caring.

Magnet® not only benefits our patients but also our staff as it is about creating an environment where nursing staff are given the freedom, space and time to think about the quality of nursing care they provide, and the autonomy to make changes to the way things are done based on their experience, expertise and judgement.
It will help ensure that patients want to use our services, because it will provide added, independent, evidence based assurance that what we do is of the highest quality.

We are really excited to be working towards Magnet® accreditation and to be working towards setting new standards in nursing care in the private sector.”

David Henderson, Hospital Director at The Holly Private Hospital said, “This is an exciting time for The Holly Private Hospital as Magnet® provides opportunities to truly empower our nurses and midwives to provide outstanding patient care. Magnet® compliments our drive to maximise opportunities for nurse training and workplace development, enabling them to work to their full potential.”

Professor Dickon Weir-Hughes, Magnet® Program Director at Oxford University Hospitals & The Oxford Institute of Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health Research is supporting The Holly and said: 'The Holly is an outstanding private hospital offering great family centered care and brilliant opportunities for their staff. Magnet® is the premier international recognition scheme for nursing excellence and countless pieces of research demonstrate the clinical benefits a Magnet® recognition. Being the first and only private hospital in UK to be formally working towards Magnet® recognition sets The Holly apart and demonstrates The Holly's and the Aspen Group's unparalleled commitment to clinical excellence'.
