Male chest reduction (Gynaecomastia)

Male chest reduction:

Male breasts, also casually referred to as ‘moobs’ or ‘man boobs’ are a common and embarrassing problem. Sometimes it is due to being overweight but in many cases, it is simply unfortunate deposits of fat which can’t be shifted by weight loss.

Rather than disguise the condition with baggy clothes, many men choose to have chest reduction surgery because it creates a flatter, firmer and more masculine chest shape. Not only are these men delighted with their improved appearance, they fit better in clothes and have increased self-esteem.

What is gynaecomastia?
Gynaecomastia is the name given to the condition can affect men of all ages and fitness. It can lead to the development of abnormal mammary gland or fatty breast tissue, giving a feminine appearance. Gynaecomastia is not caused by extra body fat, so cannot be improved by exercise or diet.

What does male chest reduction surgery involve?
The type of surgery for enlarged male breast tissue depends upon how bad the problem is. If there is just fatty tissue without excess skin then it can be corrected by liposuction, using very small incisions.

If there is also lumpy breast tissue behind the nipple then an ‘open’ procedure making a half circle cut along the lower curve of the nipple is needed to remove it. This would leave a scar line but this is well hidden along the nipple margin.

These two scenarios cover the majority of cases.

Very occasionally if the problem is very bad with loose skin then a tightening operation is required. This would leave a circular scar around the nipple and there might be a scar line passing downwards below the nipple.

How long does it take to recover from male fat and breast surgery?
As with most surgery, you should expect some bruising and swelling. You will have to wear a special compression vest for three weeks after the procedure and should avoid heavy lifting, sports and strenuous activity for several weeks.

Will I have scars?
Scarring for most procedures is minimal but your Consultant will talk to you about this. Any scars will fade with time.
