A rectal prolapse happens when a section of bowel or rectum protrudes from the bottom (anus) causing discomfort that can lead to infection. The rectum is supported by a group of muscles called the pelvic floor muscles and when these muscles become weakened due to a number of factors including childbirth and heavy lifting it can cause the rectum to prolapse. Perineal repair surgery aims to correct the prolapsed rectum by removing the area of the bowel that has prolapsed and stitching the area back together through the bottom (anus) under general anaesthetic.
Rectal prolapse surgery is usually performed in people troubled by chronic symptoms of rectal prolapse, such as leakage of stool, inability to control bowel movements (fecal incontinence) or obstructed bowel movements.
