A laparoscopy is a medical procedure that allows a surgeon to access the inside of the abdomen (tummy) and pelvis without having to make large incisions in the skin. This is also known as keyhole surgery or minimally invasive surgery. The surgeon uses an instrument called a laparoscope. This a small tube that has a light source and a camera, which relays images of the inside of the abdomen or pelvis to a television monitor.Laparoscopies are used to diagnose and treat numerous conditions including:
- endometriosis
- ovarian cyst
- ectopic pregnancy
- fibroids
- pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)
- female infertility
- unexplained abdominal or pelvic pain
- appendicitis.
The advantage of laparoscopy is that your diagnosis can be confirmed and treatment can be carried out at the same time. During the laparoscopy, small surgical instruments and devices are inserted through small incisions. This helps your surgeon perform whatever surgical procedure needs to be carried out.
