Haemorrhoids also known as piles) are soft fleshy lumps just inside the anus. They are very common and their symptoms can often disappear on their own after a few days. Often haemorrhoids can be successfully treated by simple measures such as eating more fibre and drinking more fluid. Sometimes though, the symptoms of haemorrhoids such as itchiness, discharge, soreness and bleeding - are severe and don't go away. Haemorrhoid removal treatment is needed to treat them.
You doctor may suggest you have a flexible sigmoidoscopy, where a soft, flexible tube with a camera at the end is passed through your anus (back passage) and up inside your bowel. This is done by a specially trained doctor or nurse (endoscopist), and will help to identify any causes for your
symptoms. If you do have haemorrhoids they may suggest additional treatments such as ‘banding’ to remove them or ‘injecting’ the haemorrhoids to shrink them. Haemorrhoidectomy is the surgical procedure to remove haemorrhoids.
