The dorsal root ganglion is the area of a spinal nerve that connects the nerves to your spine. This area sends impulses from nerves to your spinal cord. If you suffer back pain due to irritated spinal nerves your consultant may recommend a dorsal root ganglion block.

A dorsal root ganglion block (also known as an epidural injection) is an injection around the dorsal root ganglion.

This procedure slows or blocks impulses and can help reduce pain, particularly where the source of the pain is thought to be arising from the nervous system, (particularly the nerves that carry sensation). Although these injections may help your pain initially the effect may wear off. Often this procedure is performed as a test to find out the exact area causing problems. If you get relief from your pain, it will help the doctor to decide which procedure to do next.

Treatment is done under local anaesthetic, meaning you’ll be awake but shouldn’t feel pain during the procedure.

If you require a dorsal root ganglion block our surgeons can offer a range of advanced treatments. We offer all-inclusive self-pay packages for patients who require a dorsal root ganglion block and who wish to pay for their own treatment (terms and conditions apply). Prices start from:

• Dorsal Root Ganglion Block (Local Anaesthetic or Neurolytic) with prices starting from £1,750
• Dorsal Root Ganglion Block (Radiofrequency) with prices starting from £2,250
• Dorsal Root Ganglion Block (Radiofrequency) With Iv Sedation with prices starting from £2,450
