New outpatients gynaecological service launched

A new hysteroscopy service has been launched at Holly House Hospital enabling speedy assessment for women within their outpatients gynaecology appointment.

The new service service enables patients to be assessed in just half an hour, instead of the traditional procedure which involves a general anaesthetic and an overnight stay in hospital to recover.

A hysteroscopy procedure is performed to diagnose the causes of irregular vaginal bleeding and involves examining the inside of the womb, using a telescope attached to a light source.

Mrs Sarah Hussain, Consultant Gynaecologist and Obstetrician, who is leading the service at Holly Hospital Hospital, said: “This procedure is to find out the causes of abnormal vaginal bleeding which can affect women in their 40s and 50s as they enter, or, are in the menopause. It is suitable for women who’ve had children and performed as an outpatient it is a much quicker and convenient process as patients don’t need an anaesthetic so can go home as soon as their procedure has finished.”

If the assessment reveals a polyp, a harmless growth, it can be removed at the same time. The procedure can also diagnose other conditions requiring further treatment such as fibroids, and endometrial cancer which affects one percent of perimenopausal women.

Outpatient hysteroscopy is just one of a number of new services being introduced at Holly House as a result of the multi-million pound redevelopment which has seen the hospital double in size. The new facility includes a purpose-built outpatients department with 23 consulting rooms, pharmacy, Physiotherapy and Sports Clinic, and pathology lab as well as three new integrated theatres.
