Miss Sudeshna Patra was appointed as a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at Whipps Cross University Hospital (part of Barts Health NHS Trust) in 2009 where she runs a specialist medical retina unit and performs complex cataract surgery.  She is the clinical lead for the macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and retinal vascular disease services.

She has been the Clinical Lead for Ophthalmology at Whipps Cross for three years and under her leadership the eye service received high praise from the CQC who described the eye service as the ‘star of Whipps Cross’ commending its patient safety and clinical governance structures. In recognition of her work as Clinical Lead she was nominated as a Barts Hero in the ‘engaging’ category of the Barts Health values.

She is also the Clinical Network Director for Ophthalmology across Barts Health NHS Trust leading on strategic planning and the future vision for eye services in the region.

She completed her specialist ophthalmic training in the South West Peninsular Deanery and attained her Certificate of Completion Training in June 2006.  She has been on the specialist register of the General Medical Council since September 2006.

Miss Patra has undertaken a research fellowship in macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy at the Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre (2002) and a senior clinical fellowship in retinal disease at Kings College Hospital London (2007).  She holds both a Masters degree in Ophthalmology and a Diploma in Ophthalmology (University of Calcutta) and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh (Ophthalmology).

She has published more than 18 scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals and has an active interest in clinical research.
