Dr Chakravarti completed his MBBS and MD(Paediatrics) in Mumbai in 1977 and 1981. He then trained in the UK and USA at The Columbia University Paediatric Residency programme, and The Medical Centre of Delaware. He completed his Fellowship training in Allergy & Clinical Immunology at the Childrens Hospital of Philadelphia and The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

On returning to the UK as consultant at the Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust in Harlow, he set up one of the first specialist Paediatric Allergy services in a district general hopsital in the UK, established a CF service, and provided immunodeficiency and infectious diseases expertise for paediatric patients. The allergy service was comprehensive and provided the full range of services including immunotherapy in paediatric allergy.  He has also treated adult allergy patients for over 18 years.  He has been a specialist trainer and has trained and mentored numerous Paediatric Specialists.

Dr Chakravarti is perhaps the only consultant to have received the ‘Princess Award’ from his NHS Trust in recognition of his services to patients.

In the last several years Dr Chakravarti has gained expertise in paediatric bowel allergy and was an Honorary Consultant at Great Ormond Street Hospital for three years. He has collaborated with Great Ormond Street Hospital in bowel allergy with the gastroenterology department.

He has now left the NHS after 28 years and is solely in private practice.

Dr Chakravarti believes in listening to children and their parents. Each child or adults’ problem is unique and he feels that patients should be fully involved in the management of their condition. He tries to keep parents and patients fully informed, gives web addresses, directs patients towards specialist information, and tries to ‘demystify’ medicine. He believes that a fully informed patient or parent is part of the team treating the child or adult and this makes the process of managing an illness easier and more bearable.
